Career pathways
The Portland Central School Careers Program aims to give all students and carers or parents the best possible advice on careers options, curriculum choice and pathways planning. This includes individual planning with each student, work experience, university information, apprenticeships and traineeships as well as a wide range of other career related information, activities and resources that will help students identify their interests and plan for their future. Some of the resources that students will access include Career Tools, Myfuture, Launch your Career, and student pathways planning.
Parents and students are encouraged to make an appointment through the school office and ask for the Careers Advisor at any time.

Career Tools
The Career Tools program is a career development platform designed to support students and teachers, and schools in career exploration and planning. The program aim to make career information user friendly for students, staff and parents.
For Students:
- Career Exploration Tools:
Students can explore various careers, take interest tests, and learn about skills, abilities, and work values associated with different professions. - Career Planning Tools:
Career Tools helps students develop career plans, create e-portfolios, and build resumes and cover letters. - Work Experience and Post-School Options:
The platform provides information and resources related to work experience, virtual work experience ( for those hard to get opportunities such as marine biology) , apprenticeships, and other post-school pathways. - Access to External Resources:
Career Tools acts as a portal, allowing students to access websites of universities, TAFE, and other relevant organizations.
Senior Transition
Senior transition refers to the process of moving from Year 10 to Year 11, and subsequently to Year 12, which culminates in the Higher School Certificate (HSC). This transition involves important decisions about subject selection, future pathways including post school options and developing independence.
Key Aspects of Senior Transition:
- HSC and post school planning : The primary focus of senior transition is preparing students for the HSC, and their post school destination.
- Subject Selection: : Students make important decisions about their subject choices, considering their interests, strengths, and future aspirations. This process is done collaboratively with students, parents/carers and staff. Information about subject choices, HSC requirements, and available pathways is provided.
- Pathway Planning: Senior transition also involves exploring different educational and career pathways, including vocational training, apprenticeships, or university. The school works with students, parents and other stakeholders to create individual transition plans that are developed to address the unique needs and goals of each student. .
- Building Confidence: The transition process aims to build students' confidence and self-advocacy skills to help them navigate the challenges of senior high school and beyond.
K-12 Career Pathways Program
Portland Central School is very fortunate to be part of the K-12 Careers Pathway Program. This program works with raising student aspirations, fostering community partnerships, and developing a whole-school approach to career education so that every student finishes school ready to succeed in their chosen pathway as an informed, responsible citizen.
This program aims to include:
- the careers advisers and teachers in providing lessons, advice and support to all students, from Kindergarten to Year 12, for their transition through school and their future pathways and employment opportunities
- local employers, businesses and industry and other individuals working with schools to contribute to career experiences, pathways, employability and enterprise education
- Parents and carers collaborating with schools to support, inform and inspire their young person to choose post school pathways options aligned to their goals.
The K-12 Career learning framework supports the National Career Education Strategy to prepare students for their future careers. The framework builds the skills and general capabilities required in the workplace. The framework aims to strengthen school and employer collaboration and develop students’ career management and navigation skills.
