High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
In our classroom
At Portland Central School, our teachers ensure all learners are supported to achieve their potential. In classrooms we:
- Provide extension opportunities across all KLAs, including Visual Arts, Agriculture, and TAS subjects, so students can engage with more challenging, in-depth learning.
- Plan for enrichment and higher-order thinking tasks, including projects that lead to recognition through programs like Art Express.
- Use formative assessment and flexible grouping to identify strengths, monitor growth, and tailor learning for students requiring extension.
- Foster classrooms where students are encouraged to think creatively, take intellectual risks, and reflect on their learning.
Across our school
Across K–12, we provide a range of extension and enrichment opportunities:
- Our transition programs ensure continuity as students move from primary to secondary, maintaining access to extension activities across year levels.
- Pathways programs in academic, vocational, and creative areas give students structured opportunities to extend their skills and plan for post-school success.
- Students participate in enrichment programs, competitions, and clubs across Visual Arts, Agriculture, TAS, and STEM subjects, providing avenues for extension and achievement.
- Leadership and student voice opportunities further extend learning beyond the classroom, developing confidence, collaboration, and initiative.
Across NSW
Our students are encouraged to pursue extension opportunities beyond the school:
- Participation in statewide competitions and programs, including ICAS, Premier’s challenges, and Art Express, allows students to engage with high-performing peers and extend their skills.
- Students collaborate with other schools through iSTEM projects across Lithgow, giving them opportunities to work on innovative STEM challenges with peers across the region.
- Students access regional programs in leadership, STEM, Agriculture, Visual Arts, and TAS, building networks and experiences beyond the classroom.
- Representative pathways in sport, creative arts, and agriculture give students opportunities to excel and be recognised at zone and state levels.
