Creative arts

‘Pablo Picasso famously said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”  The goal of art education at Portland Central School is to unlock the creativity which is part of every person and, in so doing, to start an artistic dialogue which will extend into adulthood. To this end, our visual arts programs is diverse, covering a range of 2D and 3D media with an emphasis on experimentation. This includes drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking. Complimenting these practical experiences is the study of how other artists approach art making. The end result is confident and adventurous artists who can interpret the world around them and enjoy the creative process.’

Mr John Bawden, art teacher.

Creative arts is mandatory for students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts where they learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform.

Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Students must study 100 hours of both music and visual arts during Years 7 to 10. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in other art forms through elective subjects including drama, dance, photography and visual design. Students can then select from a range of courses in Years 11 to 12.
